Buy Zhonghu Instrument

A member of the bowed  strings family, the most distinguishing factor of the Zhonghu would be its soundbox, which is significantly larger in size, allowing it to possess rich resonative qualities. Commonly used in Chinese orchestras and ensembles for accompaniment and counterpoint purposes, the Zhonghu especially excels in performing melancholic and sombre tunes.

HOW SHOULD YOUR ZHONGHU SOUND LIKE?

A Zhonghu is tuned a perfect fifth (G3 – D4) lower than the Erhu (D4 – A5).

The best Zhonghu timbre should also be even and free of any form of distortions and wolf-tones. As with the Erhu, it should feel like a natural extension of your body, boasting excellent handling and responsiveness.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ZHONGHU?

Every instrument is essentially a sum of its parts, and the materials used in its construction will make or break the sound of an Zhonghu:

MATERIAL

Like the Erhu and Gaohu, the Zhonghu is constructed from a variety of Rosewoods to ensure structural stability. Being larger in size than its counterparts, it also features a correspondingly larger soundbox, allowing it to produce rich, luscious tone colors. Its membrane is also made of genuine python skin, giving it and the rest of the Chinese bowed strings family their signature sound. With stronger and more intense vibrations produced from playing this sonorous instrument, both the wood and snakeskin have to be specially curated to handle the increased vibrations in order to construct a good Zhonghu.

FURTHER CUSTOMISATION

By replacing accessories such as strings, dampers, bridges, and other various accessories, the Zhonghu’s touch and tone can vary to a large extent. Do inform us if you have a preferred touch and tone for your Zhonghu, and our luthiers will do their best to achieve it. Before your Zhonghu is packed and ready for shipment, our luthiers will conduct a series of rigorous checks to ensure that it is well set-up. Rest assured when you buy your Zhonghu online. As certain countries will require a CITES license for the importing of python skin, do let us know if you will require one before purchasing.
