Crafted from quality bamboo, the materials used in the creation of a good Dizi have to be sufficiently dried, imparting both resonance and structural durability to the instrument. Bound by threads to prevent the bamboo from cracking, this allows the Dizi to withstand the rigors of changing climates. The membrane present on the Dizi is harvested from the interior of bamboos, imparting upon the instrument its signature tone color.
Being very lightweight, a good Dizi should possess a balanced distribution of weight, fitting comfortably in your hands like a glove. Amongst the Dizi’s various subsets, an ideal tone should be clean and smooth, possessing enough body to support its various registers. The unique timbre contributed by the membrane should complement the innate resonance of the Dizi, giving rise to a sound that is uniquely Chinese, yet round and full.
When deciding on what kind of Dizi to buy, it is best to consult your teacher during lessons as they will know what Keys you will require for your repertoire and which model will best suit your playing style and skill level. No two instruments are identical and it is important to find one that you feel comfortable and connected with.
Some of the Dizi have tuning joints and some are without tuning joints. The Dizis without tuning joints tend to require further fine-tuning over time and can be difficult for you to control, however, the Dizi resonates better because it does not have the additional metal portions. The Dizis with tuning joints are often used in scenarios such as playing pieces at places without climate control. Choose your Dizi wisely, and if you need help with this, you can chat with us to learn more.
