One of the most famous stories regarding the history of the Guqin include the legend of ZhuGe Liang, a military strategist. He once found himself outnumbered by a large army, and he had barely any soldiers left to defend his citadel. Instead of surrendering, he got up onto the citadel wall, in full view of the enemy and played the Guqin so calmly that the enemies were convinced that it could only be a trap, hence withdrawing the attack.
The Guqin has a slightly arched top solid piece of wood, and a flat baseboard underneath with two sound holes. Stretched across the entire length of the instrument, the Guqin has has 7 strings that are tuned to the pentatonic scale. In order for the Guqin to be heard, it has to be placed on a special custom-made Guqin Table that helps with its sound projection.
The player presses on the strings using their left fingers, often using harmonics by pressing extremely lightly the string, releasing it a split second after plucking the string with the finger hand. The timing of when to retract one’s finger from the string is one of the fundamental techniques of Guqin playing, and is probably what gives the playing experience such a meditative and reflective element. Once mastered, the technique comes naturally and provides a calming effect of having a balance between having control and letting go.
Over years of playing, your Guqin will become more attuned to the flow of music making. As it seasons, you witness a myriad of changes. From an improvement in sound projection, responsiveness, and tone colour, this is an instrument that matures well. All Guqins undergo many rounds of stringent quality checks before shipping, so you can rest assured even if you choose to buy your Guqin online. We want to make sure we provide you with the best Guqin possible.
