Strings | Nails & Picks | Guzheng Bridges | Tapes | Cases | Guzheng Stands | AllIn contrast to the horizontally-played Dizi, the Xiao is played vertically. It has a rich history of over two thousand years. Historical records show that the Xiao most likely evolved from the Qiangdi, another vertical flute commonly played by the nomadic Qiang people. The Xiaos of today have either six or eight fingering holes, along with one hole for the left thumb on the reverse bottom side. It is played by blowing into a U-shaped notch at the head.

Most Xiao players start off as Dizi players, as many of the techniques are transferable to the Xiao. Though the techniques are very similar, the Xiao is less agile than the Dizi, and is thus used more often for slower and more sombre pieces.
Wherever it goes, an aura of refinement and nature seems to follow this instrument. With a tone color akin to the faint echoes of the mountains, poets have even compared its sound to the dulcet calls of the Phoenix, exemplifying its exalted status in ancient Chinese society.
Crafted from high end Purple Bamboo, the ingredients used to make a good Xiao should be dried for an extended period of time, improving both its tone color as well as lifespan. Further bound throughout various segments of its body, both this and its low moisture content should prevent the Xiao from cracking in the face of changing weather conditions.
A good Xiao should sound ethereal with a subtle texture, yet possess sufficient body to provide a measure of clarity through its various registers. Its weight should also be evenly distributed throughout its body, fitting into your hands snugly.
When deciding on what kind of Xiao to buy, it is best to consult your teacher during lessons as they will know what Keys you will require for your repertoire and which model will best suit your playing style and skill level. No two instruments are identical and it is important to find one that you feel comfortable and connected with.
