BUY RUAN

Ruan Instrument Splash

Based on the designs of the existing plucked string instruments of about 100 BC, the Ruan was the result of a desire for a new instrument that could be played on horseback. With 24 frets, 4 strings and a round body, it is often said to resemble a guitar, and is capable of producing a large array of dazzling sounds, that can be likened to jangling jade.

USABILITY

Sitting comfortably on one’s lap, the weight distribution of the Ruan should not lean heavily towards its neck. This will have the potential to impede the usage of performance techniques, hampering your music experience. With its frame having to withstand a good amount of string tension, hard tonewoods are used for the construction of its rim. Employing a variety of materials, they have the ability to alter the potential of the Ruan, giving it a different characteristic.

PLAYING THE RUAN

Due to the close proximity of the strings to each other, the Ruan is usually played using a plectrum. Similar to a guitar pick, the plectrum is a solid piece of plastic that helps the player to produce a more full-bodied and solid tone color when used to pluck the strings. The most basic playing techniques include the “tan” (彈): pluck outwards, and “tiao” (挑): pluck inwards, which when mastered can be used to play a tremolo, alternating the two movements to produce the notes so rapidly that they are indistinguishable from one another, producing a uniformed sound. The Ruan is able to play individual notes, producing melodies with a well-rounded tone color, as well as rich, full-bodied chords, perfect for accompaniment.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR ZHONGRUAN IS GOOD

From a serene, almost liquid like tone color, to brash fortissimos that embody the violent forces of nature, the tone of the Zhongruan should never sound scattered nor harsh even in the face of extreme dynamics. As such, the best Zhongruans should be able to handle these large contrasts in music with ease, allowing the musician to express their sentiments to their heart’s content.

SOUNDBOARD

The soundboard is another crucial aspect of the Ruan. Made from air dried cuts of paulownia wood, they have to be sufficiently seasoned in order to guarantee a good amount of resonance for the instrument. With the inclusion of sound holes, this accounts for the excellent projection that Ruans are known to have, enveloping its listeners in a comforting embrace.
