Strings | Nails & Picks | Guzheng Bridges | Tapes | Cases | Guzheng Stands | AllThe Xun is traditionally crafted using clay from Xi’an, one of China’s most historically rich regions. The clay is carefully shaped and kiln-fired, a process that hardens and enhances the instrument’s durability while giving it a resonant, earthy tone.
The kiln-firing process, perfected over centuries, allows the Xun to produce its signature deep and meditative sound, reflecting the natural qualities of the clay. This artisanal method, combined with the unique material, ensures each Xun has a distinctive texture and sound quality that resonates with the ancient Chinese musical heritage.

Both the Xun and Ocarina are played by holding the instrument with both hands, using your fingers to cover the holes on the front and back to control pitch. Blowing into the mouthpiece or top opening, creating a range of tones. By adjusting finger placement and breath control, the Xun produces deep, resonant sounds, while the Chinese Ocarina offers more melodic and brighter notes, allowing for expressive and fluid performances across different musical styles.
Traditionally, both the Xun (埙) and Ocarina (陶笛) are traditionally crafted from clay, with the Xun often using high-quality clay from regions like Xi’an. The clay is kiln-fired to ensure durability and produce the instruments’ characteristic resonant tones.
In modern times, both instruments may be made from materials like ceramics, porcelain, or even plastic, enhancing strength, tonal quality, and accessibility. Some versions also feature decorative finishes or carvings for added aesthetic appeal, making them suitable for both traditional and contemporary performances.
A good Xiao should sound ethereal with a subtle texture, yet possess sufficient body to provide a measure of clarity through its various registers. Its weight should also be evenly distributed throughout its body, fitting into your hands snugly.
