Strings | Nails & Picks | Guzheng Bridges | Tapes | Cases | Guzheng Stands | AllThe Suona is a traditional Chinese instrument that is played by blowing into a double-reed, through a mouth piece, and then through the wooden body. Traditional Suonas do not have keys, but have 7 holes drilled into it’s body. Opening and closing these holes as well as adjusting the embouchure can alter the pitch of the Suona.
With the use of Suona in modern orchestras and ensembles, the Suona has adapted to play a greater range of notes, thus bass and alto suonas were born. Some suonas also have mechanical keys, to enable the player to play chromatic passages with greater accuracy and ease.

Suonas are crafted from a wooden body that has been hollowed out, with a bell at the end for amplification. The body is made of dense rosewoods such as Black Sandalwood, Ebony, Aged Rosewood, Red Sandalwood, etc etc. These woods must be well treated to ensure a good tone and a durable instrument.
A good Xiao should sound ethereal with a subtle texture, yet possess sufficient body to provide a measure of clarity through its various registers. Its weight should also be evenly distributed throughout its body, fitting into your hands snugly.
