THE CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA
Eight Tones Music is compliant with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife Fauna and Flora (CITES), which applies to the international sale of our Gaohus.
Do tick on the CITES option (just before you add to cart) in order for us to apply the import permit should you require it. Do note that additional time is needed to process the CITES export permit application. Please allow us an additional 10 working days before we ship out your purchase. We do our best to ensure that your chosen instrument is shipped to you speedily and safely.
CITES will be compulsory for Gaohus that are $980 and above.

With its attention-grabbing brightness in tone as well as its projective capabilities, special attention should be paid to the tone quality and playability of this leading instrument. The easiest way to describe a Gaohu would be a “higher-pitched Erhu”. It is tuned to a perfect fifth (G4 – D5) above that of the Erhu (D4 – A5).
The best Gaohu timbre should also be even and free of any form of distortions and wolf-tones. As with the Erhu, it should feel like a natural extension of your body, boasting excellent handling and responsiveness.
Like the Erhu, usage of hardwoods to make Gaohus is a must due to the high degree of string tension. The snakeskin should also be specially selected, requiring just the right amount of elasticity to ensure the optimal tonal quality for that of a Gaohu, which would be different from that of an Erhu.
Being a niche instrument, the Gaohu is not as mainstreamed as the Erhu and does not have as standardised a form. Many have experimented with the construction of the Gaohu to suit their own playing style and musicality. Coming in a variety of shapes, different designs include octagonal, circular, and even trumpet shaped soundboxes. We have concluded that an octagonal soundbox design is optimal for both orchestral and ensemble usage, possessing a balanced tone that blends well.
The tone and handling of the Gaohu can be significantly altered by altering a variety of accessories like strings, bridges, dampers, and more. Do let us know should you want to further customize the tone of your Gaohu before receiving it. All Gaohus will undergo thorough checks by our luthiers before they are sent for shipment.
