It is a free reed wind instrument that is held vertically and has three bamboo pipes which pass through a grourd wind chest; the center piece has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes.
Hulusi is a solo instrument and rarely seen in ensembles, however there are still many who admire the Hulusi for its rich sound and captivating resonance, only falling short on volume.

The Hulusi is a traditional Chinese instrument that is played by holding the instrument vertically, covering the top four holes of the melody pipe with the thumb and the first three fingers with your left hand, while the first three fingers of the right hand cover the other fingerholes.
Lastly, blowing into the duct with the various fingerings to produce a stream of melodies.
Traditionally, Hulusi is crafted from bamboo for the pipes and gourd for the wind chest. However, makers nowadays use alternatives such as sandalwood, ebony and other materials to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the instrument, making it look more professional and luxurious. The reeds are crafted using brass, and a plastic covering is added to ensure the stability and safeguards the two pipes.
A good Xiao should sound ethereal with a subtle texture, yet possess sufficient body to provide a measure of clarity through its various registers. Its weight should also be evenly distributed throughout its body, fitting into your hands snugly.
