What makes this Guzheng such a special and distinctive breed of Guzheng? The Mujiuchen Winter’s Deer Urushi Guzheng is hollowed out from a single log of Paulownia wood. Unlike the common Kaoban Zhemian Guzheng from Dunhuang, Dingyun etc, the Mujiuchen Guzheng’s entire soundboard and side is carved by hand from a single block of wood without any joints. Making this Guzheng is laborious and time intensive but gives the perfect results to the finest detail to give you the best tonal quality possible. Only the high-end Zhuque Guzheng uses the fully hollowed out design.
The soundboard uses 50 year old wild-grown Paulownia wood which has been carefully air-dried in a controlled environment over 10 years. Master craftsmen carefully shape and carve out ridges on the underside of the soundboard by hand and, this Guzheng gives off a holographic-like sound.
Mujiuchen only makes fully hollowed out Guzhengs (from a single block of wood), whereby each guzheng is hollow-out from a single log without any joints and internal frame. These are high-end Guzhengs that uses 40-60 years old wild-grown Paulownia for the soundboard.
Unlike many other brands of Guzhengs with decorative panels that have interchangeable designs, each Mujiuchen Guzheng is designed and crafted from scratch. The craftsmanship and finishing of the Guzheng is top notch, and can rival any other top class Guzhengs. Mujiucheng guzhengs has its unique tonal spectrum, and its construction is similar to that of the highest tier Zhuque Guzhengs, but have brighter and more penetrative highs.

The Mujiuchen Winter’s Deer Urushi Guzheng uses a set of Guzheng bridges that is constructed using first grade Aged Rosewood. Each set of bridges is painstakingly fitted for the individual guzheng to ensure that the bridges have a perfect fit and can withstand rigourous playing over extended periods of time. Mujiuchen bridges are handcrafted in-house for their own guzhengs and the tip of the bridges are made using high quality cow bone that has been hand finished and this results in the perfect bridge for each and every Mujiuchen Guzheng.
The Mujiuchen Winter’s Deer Urushi Guzheng uses silver core nylon wounded strings specially made by Daishi exclusively for Mujiuchen.
Each Mujiuchen decorative panel is unique to every model. The Mujiuchen Winter’s Deer Urushi Guzheng’s motifs of a white deer in winter is painstakingly painted by hand. Urushi (natural lacquer) is layered upon to give texture to the design. You will be able to feel that the motifs are layered and not just painted flat on the guzheng. It takes 3 months just to complete the painting of the motif. The fine level of craftmanship is showcased to perfection here. While the decorative panel design doesn’t affect the Guzheng’s sound, who doesn’t love a Guzheng that looks as beautiful as it sounds!
