Master Zhang Lian Jun (张连均) has more than 30 years of industry experience and hails from a family of huqin makers. In his youth, Zhang honed his craft from one of the oldest surviving huqin makers – Master Wan Qi Xing (万其兴) for more than 20 years.
Zhang fervently believes in the old traditional methods of erhu making as he trusts the wisdom of the older generation master luthiers passed down upon him, however, he also believes in constantly fine-tuning the designs for the current generation. Xin Yue Qin Fang has earned its reputation as being the industry leader through its fine craftsmanship, quality control, tonal excellence.
Usage of quality ingredients is an essential part of crafting instruments with mesmerizing tone colors. Having been seasoned for a substantial period of time, this Violet Sandalwood is highly coveted for both furniture and instrument making. Heavily contributing towards this Gaohu’s achingly sweet tone, this wood also has a low level of moisture content, resulting in a very stable and solid structure that you can rely on.
The key to a sensitive and good sounding Gaohu lies in the resonating membrane of the sound box. You will find the membrane is stretched to a uniform tension across the sound box and fitted by hand. When you gently press the membrane with your fingers and you will find that it is firm to your touch – this ensures that the membrane will resonate the sound box to its maximum potential so as to give you a piercing and powerful sound.
Carved with meticulous attention to detail, this decorative window is uniquely Suzhou, adding an element of tasteful symmetry to the Gaohu. Made from Rosewood and Boxwood, Zhang Lian Jun gently fits each window in by hand, seamlessly blending it into the Gaohu.
With a beautifully Suzhou design for both the headstock’s arch and six-sided tuning pegs, this design complements the mauve hue of the Violet Sandalwood. Topped with a crown made from bone and resin, the headstock is gorgeous to behold. Truly a work of art.
